When can we come see the puppies
Often we are asked "When can we come see the puppies". Please understand why we do not let anyone around our new puppies from birth to 8 weeks of age.
Let me explain why...............
Great care and time is taken for all of our dogs and their puppies. We spend a lot of time and energy making sure our puppies are healthy. We understand your excitement and the excitement of the entire family to see the puppies. Up until the time a pup leaves our home the health and welfare of the puppies are totally dependent on us. We take that responsibility very seriously. Our care of the entire litter will ensure that you will have a healthy puppy!
First and foremost caring for a new litter and for the Mom is extremely stressful. Adding strangers to the mix will create additional stress on the mom which will then may put stress on the new born pups. We do our best not to disrupt the mom's routine as that disruption may result in a disruption of her eating and caring for the puppies perhaps even disrupting her ability to produce milk.
Puppies during this critical period are developing their immune systems. During this timeframe our litter is kept in a temperature and draft controlled environment in a room separate away from the flow of everyday house traffic. Many diseases are innocently picked up and carried on clothing and shoes. Parvo which can be picked up anywhere can wipe out an entire litter in 48 hours. This is a risk that we are not willing to take. Your puppy is not the only puppy. By protecting the entire litter from stress and disease that may be brought into the puppies environment we are in essence protecting your puppy as well!
During this timeframe we too have developed a daily routine; feeding the litter, socializing each individual puppy, caring for the mom, cleaning puppies, cleaning the whelping box and identifying each puppies personalities. We are pretty much with the litter almost 24/7. While we totally enjoy the experience it is a lot of work to care for a litter of pups and their mom, we too need some downtime.
Our pups receive their first set of shots at 6 weeks to 7 weeks of age. It takes approximately seven to ten days for the shots to take full effect, which is why we do not allow visitors to view our puppies until they are eight weeks old.
Thank You for understanding.
